Preparing Your Dog For A New Home
Your big move is over, and now you are wondering how to acclimate your pup to his new home. Below are some helpful tips to help out.
Consider the layout of your new home in relation to your previous home. If you left your pup’s food and water bowls in the kitchen, consider doing the same in your new space. If your pup slept in your bedroom or the living room, place his bed in the same room as before.
Be sure the same rules apply in your new home. If your dog was not allowed in certain rooms, such as children’s rooms or the bathroom, make sure you reinforce the same rules in your new home. Keeping the same boundaries and structure will reassure your dog.
On the first day you arrive, make sure to let your dog explore the neighborhood as well. Walk around your block a few times before introducing your pup to his new home.
Get to know your neighbors with dogs. Having your dog meet other dogs in the neighborhood on neutral grounds (neither your home or theirs for the first time) is a great way to help your dog acclimate.
Locate all parks and dog-friendly businesses where you can take your pup along.
It is also very important to maintain your dog’s schedule. Keep feeding and walk times the same. The less changes occur, the quicker your pooch will adjust to his new surroundings.
